So, on December 27th Henry finished his tour. The crew had done one extra trip to accommodate Harry Ellis who was one short. The relief on Harry’s face on the night of December 27th could be seen. But he was 28 – the others 19,20 or 21 and they thought of Harry as a generation removed from them! But Harry realized the risks and knew he would be going home.
Henry walked me back to the WAAF Mess that night and his reaction wasn’t like Harry’s at all. In fact he seemed disappointed it was all over for him.

1945 New Year celebrated in style and Henry and I remember drinking to the wonderful New Year of 1945 and smashing our glasses into the empty fireplace. Harry and Iris were with us also and Harry threw his glass but it didn’t smash and he had to have another go – not quite so romantic!
On January 2nd Henry went off to London on leave and on the 6th we met in London and I took him down to Turkey Court to meet my parents.
We had 5 great days together as I showed him Mote Park and its surroundings – the Lake with its Boathouse. We played a lot of music – Rachmaninoff – Tchaikovsky etc and for me it was all wonderful – I told him I loved him and he said he felt the same for me.
